This painting is part of the Nostalgia exhibition, in which I explored visual interpretations of several musical modes and Andalusian muwashahat. This particular work embodies the song “Zarani El Mahboub” (My Beloved Visited Me), composed by the great Egyptian musician Sayed Darwish in the Hijazkar maqam.
The lyrics are as follows:
My beloved visited me in the gardens of paradise,
Relaxing with drinks and enjoying the cup.
His desired lips have a sweet fragrance,
He won what he wanted after he struggled.
I said to him: "Oh handsome one, with the slender figure,
With your kohl-lined eyes, and your rosy cheeks,"
