When I remember the religious occasions in Syria and the days of the holy month of Ramadan, the image that immediately comes to my mind is that of the Mevlevi dervish groups with their long robes, spinning around themselves in complete immersion as a sensory expression of their love for God through dance and music.
Among the chants that always accompanied their whirling was Ya Imam al-Rusul, Ya Sanadi, a sufi hymn deeply etched in my heart, for it is tied to the memory of my mother, who would raise her voice with theirs whenever she heard it.
Although the Mevlevi order has Turkish origins, it became widespread in Syria, especially in Aleppo.
